Arles and the Alpilles

Difficulty: From 6 to 8 hours gentle walking per day. Suitable for regular weekend walkers.

Best Season: Any time but not from the end of June to middle of September due to fire risks.

The chalky chain of the Alpilles stands in the heart of Provence. From a distance, the whiteness of its arid and ragged tops, contrasting against the blue sky, gives us the illusion of it being a much larger mountain than it actually is! This tour explores the Roman town of Arles before exploring the Alpilles through Maussane les Alpilles, Les Baux de Provence, through to the beautiful St Remy de Provence. Then from St Remy you travel to the north through the Montagnette hills, through Barbentane and finishing at Tarascon. Through this tour you have the chance to see and explore the splendid sites left behind by the Romans and the Greeks - a region rich in history and beauty.

DAY ONE: Arrival at Arles. Visit of that town. Bed and breakfast in a three-star hotel

DAY TWO: Walk around Arles in the morning seeing the Roman arena and theatre, as well as the Cloisters of St Tropheme. Transfer by taxi to the St Pierre de Montmajour Abbey. Walk back on foot to Arles along the Vigueirat canal. Bed and breakfast in the same three-star hotel
